World Championships (Kiel, Germany) 2026 Official Canadian Selection Procedure

This document describes the selection process for Canada’s 29er entries to the 2026 World Championships in Kiel, Germany.

1. Overview

Canada will be allotted three (3) team entries for the 2026 World Championships. Selection of the three teams will be determined at three separate qualifying events. The top-ranked Canadian team at each designated qualifying event will earn the corresponding Canadian berth to the 2026 Worlds.

2. Qualification Events

  1. Three (3) qualifying events will be designated by the Canadian 29er Class Selection Committee. Each event will award one (1) Canadian Worlds spot to the highest-placing eligible Canadian team at that event.
  2. Only the highest-placing Canadian team at each qualifying event secures the allocation from that event.
  3. Teams can compete in one or more qualifying events. Teams are not restricted in how many qualifying events they can attend. a. West: Kitten Cup, Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, Vancouver Canada, April 26-27, 2026 b. East: Icebreaker, TSCC, Toronto Ontario, May 16-17, 2026 c. Atlantic: 29er Midwinters East, Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta St Petersburg Florida, February 13-15, 2026

3. Eligibility

  • Competitors must ensure they meet nationality, membership, and any other World Sailing or national federation criteria in force at the time of selection.
  • Both sailors who wish to qualify as a team must race the qualification event together.
  • Sailors must be members in good standing of the Canadian 29er class. 
  • Sailors must meet the country eligibility requirements set out in the Notice of Race for the 2026 29er World Championships. a. In absence of the Notice of Race being published or in absence of the NOR specifying country eligibility requirements, the World Sailing Eligibility Code Nationality Criteria shall apply. 

4. Selection Process

  1. At each qualifying event, the highest-finishing Canadian team that meets all eligibility criteria will be offered the Canadian Worlds berth associated with that event.
  2. If the highest-placing Canadian team declines the berth or is subsequently found ineligible, the berth will be offered to the next highest-placing eligible Canadian team from the same event, subject to the Class Selection Committee’s confirmation.
  3. The Class Selection Committee reserves the right to interpret and apply these procedures and to resolve disputes, with reference to World Sailing rules where applicable.
  4. This qualification process will not set a precedent and the Canadian 29er Class Association reserves the right to use a different qualification process for future World Championships.

5. Administration & Communication

  • Teams are responsible for ensuring their eligibility and for providing any documentation requested by the Canadian 29er Class Selection Committee
  • Acceptance of a berth must be confirmed in writing within the timeline specified by the Selection Committee; failure to do so may result in the berth being reallocated.

6. Effective Date

These selection procedures are effective immediately and will remain in effect for selection of teams to the 2026 World Championships in Kiel unless superseded by an updated procedure formally published by the Canadian 29er Class Selection Committee
